- Kakopetria is the largest village in the Solea valley, 55 km from Nicosia.
- Its old quarter by the river is a protected heritage site.
- Two kilometres away is Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, a UNESCO painted church.
- It has small museums of tradition, watermills and several hotels.
It's the Troodos village I'd suggest to anyone coming from Nicosia who wants an easy night in the mountains. I'd wander the old quarter as the light fades and walk to Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis in the morning.

What I would book
Kakopetria is the mountain village Nicosia people head for when they want a change of air. The Nicosia Tourism Board describes it as one of the villages most visited by locals, both for day trips and for long stays in winter. Besides that board, I use the Solea notes prepared by the mountains’ development company and the census figures.
The old quarter
Kakopetria sits at 667 metres on the north-facing foothills of the Troodos, 55 kilometres south-west of Nicosia, and its 1,255 residents in 2021 make it the largest village in the Solea valley. What makes it special is Palia Kakopetria, the old quarter, with stone houses, wooden balconies and cobbled lanes running down to the river. The company explains that it has been declared a protected heritage site, and the board likens it to an open-air museum of folk architecture.
Along the river stand watermills and bridges. The board singles out one of those mills, built in 1754 by a deacon of the St Nicholas monastery, the same monastery whose UNESCO church survives.
The UNESCO church
Two kilometres south-west of the village stands Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, the church of the roof, sole survivor of an 11th-century monastery. UNESCO counts it among the painted churches of Troodos, and seeing it costs nothing.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Kakopetria for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
More churches and museums
The village has other interesting churches. The company lists Panagia Theotokou, from 1514, with early 16th-century frescoes, the church of the Saviour, from 1520, Agios Georgios, from the 15th century, and the modern Agios Panteleimonas, from 1994. Two small museums help you understand life in the past, the Linos museum, in a traditional house in the old quarter, with tools for making wine, bread and olive oil, and the olive mill museum, in the yard of the church of the Saviour. There’s also a monument to the fallen of the 1955 EOKA struggle.
The board also recommends the Petra tou Antrogynou, the Stone of the Married Couple, and the customs linked to it.
Eating, shopping and sleeping
The old quarter has tavernas and shops selling local produce such as homemade jam and embroidery. For the night, the official mountain accommodation list for 2026 gives it 11 establishments, including hotels such as the Ekali, the Hellas, the Mill and the Minaides. Six kilometres away, on the Troodos road, the Platania picnic site has tables, a restaurant and a play area under the plane trees. My mountain hotels are in hotels in the Troodos. And five kilometres away, near the Platania forest station, the company places one of the best-known campsites in the area, with 18 toilet and shower blocks, a kitchen and facilities for disabled visitors. Down the valley lie Galata, with its painted churches, and Evrychou, with the railway museum.
