Where Cyprus is, and which continent it belongs to
Cyprus lies at the far eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, about 40 miles south of Turkey, 60 miles west of Syria and 220 miles north of Egypt, according to the Sovereign Base Areas Administration. Geographically it faces Asia, and politically it's European, as an EU member since 2004.

- Cyprus is at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, south of Turkey and west of Syria.
- It's about 40 miles from Turkey, 60 from Syria and 220 from Egypt.
- It shares maritime boundaries with Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt.
- It joined the EU in 2004 and the euro in 2008, but not Schengen.
- It's two hours ahead of the UK all year round.
What helps me place Cyprus is remembering that Turkey is about 40 miles away and Egypt about 220. That explains the mix you see in the food and the history, and why it feels a long way from home despite being in the EU.

What I would keep in mind

01 Getting there
Britain is Cyprus's biggest market
CYSTAT counted 1,440,003 tourists from the UK in 2025, nearly a third of the total. That demand is why you'll find plenty of flights to Larnaca and Paphos.

02 My tip
Put your watch forward two hours
OpenStreetMap gives Cyprus the Europe/Nicosia time zone, GMT+2, and the clocks change on the same Sundays as in the UK, the last in March and the last in October. So it's always two hours ahead.

EU, but not Schengen
You pay in euros and the EU sets the rules in the Republic, but Cyprus isn't in Schengen, so your days here don't count towards your Schengen 90, says gov.uk.

What I would book
Plenty of people type this into a search engine before booking, and fair enough, because the island sits in a corner of the map many people can’t quite place. Cyprus is at the far eastern end of the Mediterranean, facing the coasts of Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. Here I place it using the official distances, explain which continent it belongs to and what that means for your trip. The plan with districts and towns is in the map of Cyprus.
South of Turkey, west of Syria
The Sovereign Base Areas Administration, which runs the two British bases on the island and publishes a background page on Cyprus, puts it about 40 miles south of Turkey, 60 miles west of the Syrian coast and 220 miles north of Egypt. Lebanon and Israel also lie to the east. The Spanish foreign ministry notes that Cyprus shares maritime boundaries, through its exclusive economic zone, with all five countries, though only those with Egypt, Lebanon and Israel are set by agreement.
A few more details to fix it in place. The 35th parallel runs through the island, with Nicosia at about 35° 10’ north and Limassol at about 34° 41’, according to OpenStreetMap. East to west it runs 240 km, and north to south 100, says CYSTAT. For a sense of scale, see how big is Cyprus.
Which continent is Cyprus in?
There are two answers, and both are true. On the map, it faces the Asian shore of the Mediterranean, nearer to Turkey and Syria than to Greece. Politically, Cyprus is European, full stop. The Republic joined the EU in May 2004, switched to the euro in 2008, and belongs to the Council of Europe and the OSCE. It isn’t in NATO, says the Spanish foreign ministry, and it isn’t in Schengen yet.
For a British visitor, the second answer is the one that matters day to day. Euros, a valid GHIC in the Republic and no Entry/Exit System registration, as gov.uk confirms. In the north, outside the government’s control since 1974, things work differently, as I explain in my Cyprus travel guide.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Paphos before prices climb.
Where each part of the island lies
It also helps to get your bearings on the island itself. The Republic of Cyprus is the recognised state, and its government controls the south and west, home to Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa. The north slipped out of its control in 1974, and a UN-patrolled strip some 180 km long separates the two halves. In the southern half there are also two British bases, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, kept by the UK in 1960.
On a first trip, almost everything you’ll see lies in the Republic, along the south coast and in the Troodos. How the island splits into six districts is in the districts of Cyprus.
Two hours ahead of the UK
OpenStreetMap gives Cyprus the Europe/Nicosia time zone, GMT+2, and the EU’s Directive 2000/84/EC sets summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, the same Sundays gov.uk gives for the UK. So it’s two hours ahead all year round. Land at 18:00 local time and it’s 16:00 back home. The clock changes for 2026 and 2027 are in time in Cyprus.
The distance shows more in the flight than in the clock. The good news is choice. Britain is Cyprus’s largest market by far, and with that much demand there’s no shortage of flights to Larnaca and Paphos. More in flights to Cyprus.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Paphos and choose by the reviews.
Why the location matters for your trip
Being this far east shows in the climate, with long dry summers, and in the blend of cultures you notice in the food and the place names. It also explains why Greek and Turkish share official status and why English, a legacy of British rule, is widely used, as the Spanish foreign ministry notes. I cover that in languages in Cyprus.
Above all, it explains the island’s history, which has passed through the hands of almost every power in the eastern Mediterranean, the British included. Akrotiri and Dhekelia, the two bases Britain kept in 1960, remain UK territory to this day. Where the name Cyprus comes from, and how it’s said in Greek and Turkish, is in the name of Cyprus.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Paphos on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cyprus in Europe or Asia?
Geographically it sits at the far eastern end of the Mediterranean, facing the coasts of Asia, about 40 miles from Turkey according to the Sovereign Base Areas Administration. Politically it's European, as the Republic has been in the EU since 1 May 2004 and in the euro since 2008.
Where is Cyprus located?
At the far eastern end of the Mediterranean, south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon. The Sovereign Base Areas Administration puts it about 40 miles from Turkey, 60 from the Syrian coast and 220 from Egypt.
What country is Cyprus in?
Cyprus is a country in its own right, the Republic of Cyprus, independent since 16 August 1960 and an EU member. It isn't part of Greece or Turkey, although since 1974 the north hasn't been under its government's effective control.
Which countries are near Cyprus?
Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt, the five with which it shares maritime boundaries through its exclusive economic zone, according to the Spanish foreign ministry.
What is the time difference between Cyprus and the UK?
Cyprus is two hours ahead of the UK all year. It's in the Europe/Nicosia time zone, GMT+2, and the EU's summer-time directive sets the change for the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October, the same Sundays gov.uk gives for Britain.
Can you fly direct to Cyprus from the UK?
Yes, to both Larnaca and Paphos, although routes change every season and the airport operator doesn't allow its schedule to be reused, so I can't list them. With 1,440,003 UK tourists in 2025, according to CYSTAT, there's no shortage of demand.
