  • Governor's Beach is between Limassol and Larnaca.
  • It has clear, shallow water and soft sand.
  • Its white rocks are good for snorkelling.
  • A year-round campsite sits right next to it.

I'd bring a snorkel mask and water shoes. The draw is the white rocks and the clear water, and that's where you'll enjoy it most. Driving from Limassol or Larnaca, come off the motorway and give it a whole morning.

What I would book

Ask me for a beach in Limassol district worth the detour and I’ll say Governor’s Beach without much hesitation. It isn’t the biggest or the most convenient, but the contrast of clear water against white rocks is among the loveliest sights on the south coast. Here’s what it’s like and how I’d plan a visit.

Where it is

Governor’s Beach is on the eastern coast of the district, within Pentakomo, halfway between Limassol and Larnaca. Measured on OpenStreetMap, central Limassol is some 22 km away and Larnaca airport about 35. The tourist board puts the campsite about 20 km east of Limassol, just off the motorway, so it’s quick to reach once you leave it.

What the beach is like

The Limassol tourist board describes it as a quiet spot with clear, shallow water and soft sand, perfect for families with children. What sets it apart are the white rocks round about, which the board recommends as an excellent spot for snorkelling and seeing marine life. Behind are gentle hills and trails, so it suits anyone who enjoys the outdoors as well.

The photo on this page shows a wave breaking over those white rocks, with a dark sea behind. It’s the picture that best explains why it’s worth coming.

What to bring and what to bear in mind

I’d bring a snorkel mask, water shoes for the rocks and plenty of water. I have no official details of facilities on the beach itself, such as sunloungers or lifeguards, so don’t count on them. With children, stay on the sandy part and watch them on the rocks.

Two more beaches nearby feature on the board’s list. Kalymnos, in the Pentakomo area, relaxed, with the campsite next door and lifeguards during the bathing season. And Agios Georgios Alamanou, reached via the Pentakomo exit, small, sand and grass, with a waterfront restaurant and rocks for snorkelling, named after the monastery of Saint George beside it. I compare them all in Limassol beaches.

Sleeping by the sea, the campsite

Next to the beach is the Governor’s Beach Kalymnos campsite. According to the tourist board, it’s right on the coast, opens all year and can take 230 caravans and 247 tents, making it one of the largest in Cyprus. It has toilets, showers, a launderette with coin-operated machines and a seafront restaurant, and in July and August a small shop opens too. On a budget, it’s a way to sleep with the beach on your doorstep.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Governor's Beach and pick one that fits your day.

Fitting it into your trip

Governor’s Beach is a good stop if you’re driving between Limassol and Larnaca, or if you’re staying on the Amathus coast, about 12 km away as the crow flies. It also pairs with the Neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia, a World Heritage Site about 12 km inland. For the rest of the district, see Limassol district, and for a hotel with a beach in town, hotels in Limassol. If you’re travelling with a tent or caravan, the Governor’s Beach campsite opens all year, and I compare it with the others in camping in Cyprus.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Limassol before you arrive rather than at the desk.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Limassol on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
