When to visit Cyprus
Cyprus in summer, beaches and serious heat
Summer in Cyprus means heat and beaches. According to the WMO, August's average high is 33.5 °C in Larnaca and 37.5 °C in Nicosia, and Paphos records no rainy days at all. It's also peak season, with 602,026 visitors in August 2025, 193,091 of them from the UK, according to CYSTAT.

- 33 °C on the coast and 37 °C in Nicosia, with no rain.
- Peak season, with 602,026 visitors in August 2025.
- High wildfire risk; the mountains are best at midday.
In summer I'd do the beach early and late, a siesta or an air-conditioned museum at midday, and no countryside walks in the full sun. And I'd head up to the Troodos for a day to cool off.

What I would book
Summer is the season most people link with Cyprus, and I can see why, with endless sun, long days and almost no rain. But it’s worth arriving knowing how hot it gets and how to plan your day. I explain it with WMO, CYSTAT, gov.uk and Central Bank data. Other months are covered in Cyprus weather.
The heat
In Larnaca the average high climbs from 30.8 °C in June to 33.5 °C in August, and lows don’t drop below 20 °C. In Paphos, to the west, summer is a shade kinder, at 31 °C in August. Inland Nicosia reaches a 37.5 °C high in July and August. Rain is almost absent, and at Paphos the WMO records no rainy days in July or August.
The mountains as a refuge
Up at Prodromos, August peaks at 28.9 °C and cools to 18.6 °C at night. It’s the obvious day trip on a hot day, and for an overnight stay, look at hotels in the Troodos.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ayia Napa before prices climb.
Peak season
According to CYSTAT, 498,527 visitors arrived in June 2025, 589,116 in July and 602,026 in August, the year’s high. From the UK alone, July and August brought around 190,000 each. In 2026, July and August were both around 580,000. With numbers like that, book your room and car early; for getting around freely, see car hire in Cyprus, where you’ll drive on the left as at home.
Festivals and holidays
Pentecost Monday is a public holiday, 1 June in 2026 and 21 June in 2027, according to the Central Bank, and with it comes Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood. In 2026 Larnaca celebrated it from 29 May to 3 June, with poetry contests and dancing by Finikoudes beach. The Assumption, on 15 August, falls on a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. Its stages go up along Finikoudes, the palm-lined seafront.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Ayia Napa and choose by the reviews.
Wildfires and safety
gov.uk rates wildfire danger as high for the whole April-October stretch and wants visitors’ phones registered for emergency alerts. The Spanish foreign ministry adds that crimes against tourists cluster in high season, as I cover in is Cyprus safe.
Compared with 2024
Summer is the slowest-growing season. According to CYSTAT, June 2025 had 3.4 % more visitors than June 2024, July 6.9 % more and August 8.5 % more. Arrivals from the UK reached 193,091 in August, almost a third of the total.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Ayia Napa on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
How I’d handle it
Beach early and at sunset, indoors at midday and plenty of water always to hand. If the heat puts you off, June and September are slightly gentler, with 30.8 and 31.4 °C highs in Larnaca, and a little less crowded than July and August.
When the heat eases, my favourite season begins, Cyprus in autumn.
Month by month, there’s Cyprus in June, Cyprus in July and Cyprus in August, and for Larnaca’s Festival of the Flood, Kataklysmos. If fine sand and clear water are what you want, start with the Ayia Napa beaches.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ayia Napa before prices climb.
