Tarxien, the town that gave its name to an age of prehistory

Not many towns can say archaeologists use their name for an entire era. Tarxien can. When UNESCO dates the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, it talks of the Żebbuġ, Ġgantija and Tarxien phases of Maltese prehistory. Behind that label is this local council south of the Grand Harbour and the temples found within it.

A town with temples among the houses

Tarxien, Ħal Tarxien in Maltese, is one of the 14 local councils in the Southern Harbour statistical district. The NSO counted 10,266 residents at the end of 2025, 1,651 of them foreign nationals, over two hundred more than a year earlier. Its density, 11,705 people per km², is almost double Valletta’s 6,170.

So this is a busy, tightly packed town rather than an archaeological site in open country. What puts it on a visitor’s map are the temples a farmer, Lorenzo Despott, found here in 1913, and which Sir Themistocles Zammit excavated between 1915 and 1919.

What to see in Tarxien

The main visit is the Tarxien Temples, on Triq It-Tempji Neolitici. They’re four late Neolithic megalithic structures, reused in the Bronze Age, and among the megalithic temples UNESCO added to the World Heritage list in 1980, with an extension in 1992. What makes them different is the carving, spirals and domestic animals in the South Structure, plus the lower half of a colossal statue in a pleated skirt.

Tickets are €6 for adults and the Multisite Pass covers them. In season, to 31 October 2026, you can visit every day from 10:00 until 18:00; from November it’s 09:00 until 17:00. The walkway is fully wheelchair accessible, which isn’t the case throughout the Hypogeum, rated only partly accessible by Heritage Malta.

Beyond the temples, I have no official source for other visits in Tarxien with opening times I could recommend. I’d rather tell you that than pad the page with places I can’t check. If you’re travelling from the UK on a long weekend, that honesty matters, because every hour spent chasing an unverified sight is an hour not spent at the Hypogeum or on the ferry across to the Three Cities.

What does the Tarxien phase mean?

Maltese prehistory is split into phases named after places, and UNESCO names three when dating the Hypogeum, Żebbuġ, Ġgantija and Tarxien, together running from about 4000 to 2500 BC. Tarxien comes last on that list, which fits what Heritage Malta says about the town’s temples, built in the late Neolithic.

What came next can be seen here too. Once the Bronze Age arrived, after 2000 BC, new settlers reused part of the complex as a cremation cemetery. For me that overlap is the most interesting thing about Tarxien as a place. On one plot you see the end of the temple culture, which UNESCO ranks with the oldest free-standing stone structures anywhere, and the start of another people with other customs. Tarxien and Paola, a prehistoric morning

Tarxien’s trump card is its neighbour. A few minutes away in Paola is the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the prehistoric underground cemetery that admits only 10 people at a time and must be booked. Show its ticket when buying at the temples’ desk and you pay half, €3 instead of €6.

My ideal morning goes like this. First, the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, where the most fragile finds from these temples and the Hypogeum are kept. Then the Hypogeum at your booked time. And to finish, Tarxien, with your head already full of what to look for in the stones, which makes the carvings far easier to read on site. If you’ve energy left and it’s the second Sunday of the month, Kordin III in Paola has a combined ticket with Tarxien.

Getting to Tarxien

Heritage Malta puts the nearest bus stop to the temples 5 minutes’ walk away. No official source I’ve found lists the routes through Tarxien, so use Malta Public Transport’s own journey planner, or read the Malta buses page for fares and passes. For a bed, I’d stay in Valletta. Tarxien is a half-morning, and the rest of this corner of the Grand Harbour is on Paola (Raħal Ġdid). Right next to Tarxien is Fgura, a residential town of 14,270 people that only matters if you’re staying there.
