Marsalforn, Gozo's north-coast seaside resort

Marsalforn is where I’d send anyone who wants the sea on Gozo without hiring a car. The Ministry for Gozo calls it postcard-perfect; I’d add that it’s above all practical, with a promenade, hotels and restaurants, a big bay of clear water and everything within walking distance. The Ministry says it bustles with holidaymakers in summer and turns serene in winter, and I suspect both halves are true.

A resort since the sixties

According to the Ministry, Marsalforn has been a holiday destination since the early days of Gozo’s tourism, in the late 1960s and 1970s, and it’s one of the island’s larger bays, ringed by hills. The little harbour, Il-Menqa, still has its brightly painted luzzus, and you’ll often see fishermen with their nets; the Ministry calls it the soul of the place. The Church of St Paul’s Shipwreck, with its steeple and clock, is visible from across the bay.

As for which council it belongs to, no official source I’ve read says. The Ministry places its bays within easy reach of Żebbuġ and mentions tracks up to Xagħra, while Qbajjar, the next bay along, it does count as part of Żebbuġ.

Where to swim

The bay caters for everyone. Families with small children settle on the sand by the police station, protected by the breakwater. Stronger swimmers head for the rocks of Il-Ponta ta’ Santa Marija and Għar Qawqla, reached by the steps from the quay, and only when the sea is calm. Just beyond are Qbajjar and Xwejni, two shallow bays of pebbles and rock that the Ministry recommends for beginner divers.

The MTA lists Marsalforn among its Blue Flag beaches of 2019. The 2026 list wasn’t something I could get hold of, so whether it kept the flag is unconfirmed. I compare the rest of the island in Gozo beaches.

Walking, diving and the salt pans

What I like most about Marsalforn is what’s within walking distance. The Ministry suggests starting the day with a brisk walk along the promenade or up the tracks towards Xagħra and Qbajjar. Carrying on along the shore to Xwejni, it says, is like walking along the water’s edge, and at the end are the Xwejni salt pans, which I wouldn’t miss at sunset. The village has several dive centres of its own. If you’ve never dived, Qbajjar is a good place to start, and if you’re qualified, Gozo has the Blue Hole at Dwejra, one of the island’s best-known dive sites; more in diving in Malta.

Staying in Marsalforn

It has more places to stay than anywhere else on Gozo. The MTA register of 28 September 2026 lists 4 hotels, two four-star, the Hotel Calypso on Il-Menqa and the Reef, and two three-star, plus 5 guesthouses, a hostel and 244 licensed holiday lets, the highest count on the island. The Ministry says many are within a five-minute walk of the beach and that the village has enough shops and amenities to save you trips elsewhere.

When to go

It depends what you’re after. In summer Marsalforn is busy with holidaymakers, many of them Maltese, since 67.4% of tourists staying on Gozo and Comino in 2025 came from Malta itself, according to the NSO. The Ministry says the water warms from roughly 16°C in spring to 27°C in summer. I’d go in June or September, when the water is warm and the village calmer than in August, which also neatly sidesteps the English school holidays.

Eating and evenings

The Ministry for Gozo says Marsalforn’s link with the sea is why it has so many seaside restaurants, and the fishing harbour is the obvious place to start. Qbajjar, next door, has a couple more bars and restaurants on the front. Evenings here are about a walk along the promenade and dinner by the water rather than nightlife, which for me is exactly the point of staying on Gozo.

Getting there

From the main island, Gozo Channel sails from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, and the €4.65 return is paid at the end. From Mġarr, drive or take the bus; Malta Public Transport lists route 322 to Marsalforn.
