Isle of MTV Malta: the big free gig of the Maltese summer

Isle of MTV Malta is one of those events that sounds too good to be true. International stars, a Mediterranean summer night, an open-air stage and no ticket to buy. But it’s real, and it’s been going for years. Here’s what it is, how the 2026 edition went and what you need to know to go.

What Isle of MTV Malta is

It’s a festival MTV puts on with the Malta Tourism Authority. The authority describes it as Europe’s biggest free summer festival, drawing tens of thousands of fans from Malta and abroad. In 2026 it reached its 18th year.

The format is simple. One big concert night in Il Fosos Square, with one or more international headliners and Maltese acts, later broadcast on MTV channels around the world. Around it runs a week of club nights at some of the island’s best-known venues, the Isle of MTV Malta Music Week, which is ticketed.

How the 2026 edition went

It took place on Wednesday 22 July. Katy Perry headlined, on her first ever performance in Malta and her Isle of MTV debut, according to the MTA. Alongside her were DJ and producer Afrojack and Aidan, whom the authority describes as the island’s most successful number one artist and who represented Malta at Eurovision 2026. Local acts and DJs played through the evening.

Music Week ran from 22 to 26 July at several venues, with tickets on isleofmtv.com. The concert premiered on MTV’s international channels on 18 September 2026.

Where it is, and why the venue matters

Il Fosos Square is the big open space by the Floriana Granaries, right outside Valletta. The MTA headlined its 2026 review with the festival lighting up the Granaries, and it uses the same space for other summer concerts, such as the BBC Concert Orchestra in July 2026. It’s a central venue on the capital’s doorstep, which makes getting there, and above all getting back, much easier. The town is on Floriana.

When is the 2027 show?

The MTA hasn’t published a 2027 date. In 2026 the headliner was announced in early June, only about six weeks before the show, so I wouldn’t book a trip purely around it too far ahead without confirmation. My advice is to watch the tourism authority’s site and the festival’s own, and if you’re already heading to Malta in July, keep an eye out for the announcement. More music while you’re there

Isle of MTV isn’t the only summer gig. In 2026 there were three more with official dates. The BBC Concert Orchestra played the same Floriana Granaries on 4 July, with BBC Radio 2, after six years of sold-out Malta shows, as the MTA put it. SummerDaze brought Lewis Capaldi on 11 August and Calvin Harris on the 15th to the Ta’ Qali Concert Area, with €10 tickets and 18,000 people on the first night, according to the MTA. And Festivals Malta’s Malta Jazz Festival ran in Valletta from 6 to 11 July, returning from 5 to 10 July in 2027. Time it right and July gives you more than one concert on the same trip.

Tips for going

July in Malta is hot, with a 26.9°C (80°F) monthly mean and heatwaves that pass 40°C. An outdoor show with thousands of people calls for water, an early arrival to find a spot and light clothes. The month’s weather is on Malta in July.

For somewhere to sleep, Valletta or Floriana itself is the practical choice, a short walk from the venue. If you’re in Sliema, St Julian’s or Buġibba, expect packed buses afterwards, or check the Sliema to Valletta ferry’s night timetable with the operator in advance. If you want to keep the party going, there’s Music Week and Paceville, but those are another story and another budget.

A common-sense word for any big crowd in Malta. The Foreign Office warns of pickpocketing on buses between Valletta and St Julian’s, and of drinks being spiked in Paceville at night. Keep valuables to a minimum and your phone out of reach.

For British fans, the practical side is straightforward. Flights to Malta are short, the plug and the side of the road are the same as at home, and English is spoken officially, so the only real planning is the date. Once the 2027 edition is announced, I’d book the room first, because July is peak season and the airport handles over a million passengers that month.
