Madrid to Malta flights, and the late-night landing

If you’re British and living in Spain, or combining a few days in Madrid with Malta, the good news is that the route is direct all year. The detail almost nobody mentions is when you land, and on this route that matters more than the fare. I checked Malta’s own airport board to show you.

Direct all year, with two airlines

Spain’s foreign ministry lists Madrid and Barcelona as the two Spanish cities with year-round direct flights to Malta. To see who actually flies it, I look at the departures and arrivals pages of Malta International Airport, which show the airline and flight number. On 28 September 2026 there were two departures for Barajas, KM 586 with KM Malta Airlines at 17:40 and FR 5383 with Ryanair at 18:50.

When do Madrid flights land in Malta?

Here’s the part I’d plan around. The inbound flights that night, KM 587 and FR 5382, touched down in Luqa at 00:15 and 00:55. In other words, on this route your first hour in Malta is quite likely to be in the small hours.

That changes how I’d plan the first night. I wouldn’t book somewhere far away like Mellieħa or Gozo for it. I’d look for a room around Valletta, Sliema or St Julian’s and leave the longer journeys for the next day, in daylight and with the buses running at full strength.

From the airport after midnight

By day the Airport Direct is unbeatable, with five routes costing €3 each, or €3.50 on the TD1, to the capital, the Sliema coast, Buġibba and the north. After midnight it’s another story. Malta Public Transport has night routes that cost €3 plus an On Demand service you book in its app, but at one in the morning I wouldn’t count on either without checking that night’s timetable.

The option I’m most comfortable with is a prepaid taxi. Gozo’s tourism ministry explains that the Welcomers’ Hall has a booth selling taxi tickets at fixed rates, and the rank is just outside. Malta’s tourism authority advises agreeing any fare before getting in, and a prepaid ticket takes that conversation off the table. I compare every option, with prices, in Malta airport to Valletta.

What’s open in the terminal at that hour

Landing at 00:15 also means half the airport’s services have closed for the night. The Malta Tourism Authority’s information office in the Welcomers’ Hall opens from 10:00 to 21:00, and the airport pharmacy closes at 22:00, so don’t count on either for a map or a paracetamol. The bus ticket office in arrivals shuts at 19:30, although the ticket machines beside it and at the bus stop work around the clock. Cash is less of a worry, because there are ATMs in the Welcomers’ Hall, and Malta’s tourism authority said in 2023 that the airport’s exchange bureaux open 24 hours a day. If you need anything else for the first morning, I’d pack it in Madrid.

The flight back gives you a full last day

The upside of this route is the return. With departures at 17:40 and 18:50, your last day has room for a morning in Valletta or Mdina and a relaxed lunch before heading to Luqa. From Valletta, the TD4 runs to the airport every 30 minutes, so there’s no need to leave hours early.

I’d still sort the luggage. Once you’ve checked out, the airport has a left-luggage service, while the cruise port only stores bags for cruise and ferry passengers.

ID and clocks

Madrid and Malta are both in Schengen, but you still need an identity document to board, and for most British travellers that means the passport. There’s no need to touch your watch, because the time in Malta is Central European Time, just as in Madrid. The plug is the one change you won’t notice, as Malta uses the same three-pin sockets as home.
