The Malta fireworks festival: April nights over the Grand Harbour

In Malta, fireworks aren’t just party decoration, they’re close to a national craft. Every village has its pyrotechnicians, who work all year for the big night of their festa. Once a year, in April, all that tradition comes together in an international festival over the Grand Harbour. Below, how it works, what happened in 2026 and what we know of 2027.

What the festival is

The Malta International Fireworks Festival is organised by the Malta Tourism Authority and reached its 25th edition in 2026. The authority calls it one of the country’s best-loved cultural traditions and, at the same time, a way to bring in visitors outside the summer, which is why it’s held in April.

It blends two things. A pyro-musical competition, with fireworks choreographed to music, and displays of traditional Maltese fireworks with their old names, beraq and its variants, coloured murtali, sfejjer and blalen. Village band clubs play throughout, bringing the atmosphere of a festa to the festival.

How the 2026 edition went

The MTA set out the details. The festival ran from 18 to 30 April and brought together around 40 fireworks factories and societies. It opened on the 18th in Nadur, Gozo, with non-competitive displays, traditional fireworks and a closing show by the previous year’s winners, Għaqda Piroteknika 10 ta’ Awwissu from Birgu. The village is on Nadur.

The pyro-musical competition took place on the 20th and 25th over Valletta’s Grand Harbour, with four teams a night. Eight competed, two more than in 2025, four Maltese and four from abroad, among them a Canadian company, which brought in participation from outside Europe. The grand finale was on the 30th, again over the Grand Harbour, and Heritage Malta opened Fort St Angelo that evening for people to watch from its bastions.

When is the 2027 festival?

The Malta Tourism Authority hasn’t published the 2027 dates yet. What I can tell you is that it’s an April event and that the 2026 edition spanned almost two weeks with four fireworks nights. If you’re planning a trip around it, I’d wait for the official announcement, which came out in January in 2026, before booking flights. Events that already have dates are on events in Malta.

Where to watch

The Grand Harbour is a natural amphitheatre, walled on both sides, and that’s what makes the show special. The fireworks reflect in the water and the sound bounces off the bastions. Any high point on the Valletta or Three Cities walls works. I’d head for the Upper Barrakka terrace, covered on the Barrakka Gardens.

Watching from the street is free. In 2026 the MTA also sold seated tickets. My advice is to arrive well ahead, as the festival draws plenty of Maltese families as well as visitors, and the best viewpoints fill fast.

April, a good month to travel anyway

The festival lands in one of my favourite months for Malta. April averages 16.4°C (62°F) with around 253 hours of sunshine according to the Meteorological Office, and it barely rains. The sea is still cool, at about 16°C, so it’s a trip for cities, temples and walks rather than the beach. Heritage Malta is on its long summer hours from 1 March, with temples and forts open until 19:00, leaving the whole day for sightseeing before a fireworks night. Depending on the year, Easter may fall close by, and its dates are on Easter in Malta.

Fireworks the rest of the year

If you can’t make April, you won’t miss out. Every village feast from late May to September ends with aerial and ground fireworks, and some are famous for them. In Gozo, Kerċem lets them off from the fields and Xlendi from barges on the water, according to Gozo’s Ministry. The feasts themselves are explained on Malta’s village feasts.

A word for anyone travelling with a dog or very young children. Maltese fireworks are loud, with petards you can hear a long way off, so bear that in mind when choosing where to stay during the festival or a festa. Coming from the UK, the timing is handy too, as April often lines up with the Easter school holidays, though that depends on when Easter falls and on your local term dates.
