Iklin, residential Malta in the middle of the island

Iklin has its own page for a simple reason, it’s one of Malta’s 68 localities with a council. But I’m not going to make up sights for it. It’s a residential village of 3,760 people, according to the NSO, with no ticketed attractions and no official tourist information, so what I can usefully do is explain what to expect if you’ve booked somewhere to stay here.

How it describes itself

Iklin’s local council sums it up in a few lines. It calls it a locality that’s urban and rural at once, with its own parish church, a modern place with large and popular establishments, and in the centre of Malta. It gives a population of 3,200, but the NSO’s current figure is higher, 3,760 at the end of 2025, barely changed on the year before.

Its places-of-interest page is empty, which says a lot about how the village sees itself, and no other official source I’ve checked points to a ticketed sight. I’d rather say so than pad the page out.

A parish barely twenty years old

The best account of the village comes from its parish. On its own website, the Holy Family parish says that some forty years earlier Iklin was mostly fields with a handful of houses, and that it was part of Lija’s parish until families began settling here in the early 1980s. Mass was said in a rented garage for years. Iklin became an autonomous pastoral zone on 15 February 2003 and a parish, dedicated to the Holy Family, on 19 March 2005.

The parish is candid about what it isn’t. It describes itself as a young parish with no old church of architectural note, no band clubs, no outdoor festa and no titular statue. So if you’re hoping to catch a village feast with fireworks, this isn’t the place.

The modern church

What there is, is a modern, air-conditioned church that holds around 300 people. The parish explains it was first meant to be a hall, with a bigger church built on top, until the money ran out. Archbishop Charles Scicluna consecrated it on 6 May 2017, and relics of St George Preca, Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani and Blessed Nazju Falzon were placed under the main altar. The titular painting of the Holy Family, three figures in white against gold, is by the Gozitan painter Pawlu Camilleri Cauchi and dates from 2007. It’s a place for locals rather than a sight.

Who lives in Iklin

It’s a village of local life. The NSO counts 728 foreign residents out of 3,760, a low share compared with the coast, where in Sliema and St Julian’s foreign residents outnumber Maltese ones. District and region, two different maps

Here’s a detail that confuses anyone poring over maps of Malta. The NSO, the statistics office, puts Iklin in the Western district, alongside Mdina, Rabat and Dingli. Yet its own local council says it belongs to the Eastern Region. It isn’t a mistake; they’re two separate divisions, one statistical and one administrative, and they don’t line up. For visitors it makes no difference, but it explains why Iklin turns up in different lists depending on the source.

Does it make sense to stay in Iklin?

Rarely, because there’s hardly anything to choose from. The MTA register, checked on 28 September 2026, lists a single guesthouse in Iklin, The Red Farm, and four licensed holiday lets, with no hotel at all. If you’re renting a flat here, make sure it’s on that register.

As a base, Iklin sits in the middle of the island. The nearest places of interest are the Three Villages, with Lija and Balzan, and beyond them Mdina.
