Gozo hotels, farmhouses and the twin-centre holiday

Most people see Gozo the wrong way round, through no fault of their own. They catch a mid-morning ferry, tour the Citadel, Dwejra and Ramla by coach or hop-on bus, and head back for dinner. In 2024, according to the MTA, 91.2% of international visitors to Gozo were day-trippers. Stay the night and you get the island early in the morning and at dusk, which to me is a different place altogether.

The twin-centre case

Splitting a holiday between two bases has a name, the twin-centre holiday, and the MTA uses it in its own statistics. Malta and Gozo are made for it. The MTA’s figures show twin-centre visitors spending 3.9 nights on Gozo on average, against 8.3 for those who stay only on Gozo. For a first trip I’d follow the twin-centre pattern, with the main island first and three or four nights on Gozo at the end, so you finish slowly and cross back with time for the flight.

What there is to book

Gozo had 20 licensed hotels on the MTA’s list at the end of September 2026, with 941 rooms in total. Two are five-star, the Kempinski San Lawrenz and the Ta’ Cenc in Sannat, five are four-star, nine three-star and four two-star. There are also 32 guesthouses, 2 hostels and 1,202 licensed holiday lets.

How people use it is the interesting bit. Among tourists who based themselves solely on Gozo in 2024, 44.2% slept in flats, farmhouses or villas and 29.9% in hotels, according to the MTA. Across Malta as a whole, by contrast, more than half of tourist nights are spent in hotels and similar. On Gozo, the typical bed isn’t in a hotel.

Farmhouses, Gozo’s speciality

The Ministry for Gozo describes its farmhouses as restored houses of traditional limestone with shaded courtyards, thick walls and beamed interiors, and says most have their own pool and almost all are in the villages. For a family or group of friends with a hire car, I rate it the finest way to stay anywhere in Malta. Without a car I’d think twice, because you’ll depend on the bus and on how well the village is served.

Small hotels follow the same village logic. The Ministry places most of Gozo’s boutique hotels near the squares of Nadur, Xewkija, Xagħra, Qala and Sannat, and the register lists three small Quaint hotels, of 10 to 13 rooms, on the squares of Nadur, Xewkija and Sannat.

On a tighter budget, look at guesthouses. The Ministry for Gozo describes them as small and family-run, classified as Standard or Comfort, and the MTA register counts 32 on the island, mostly in Victoria (7), Xagħra (6), Marsalforn (5) and Għarb (5). For two or three nights I’d happily take one over a three-star hotel, especially in Victoria, where the buses start. Couples get the same advice, two or three nights on Gozo, in Malta for couples.

Seaside or capital?

If I want to walk to a swim without a car, I choose Marsalforn. It’s the big bay on the north coast, with 4 hotels, 5 guesthouses, a hostel and 244 holiday lets, the most on Gozo, plus bus 322. The Xwejni salt pans are a walk along the shore.

Xlendi is the south-west alternative, a small cove between cliffs with 3 hotels and 131 holiday lets. It’s gorgeous and more enclosed, and in August it fills up. Victoria has no sea, but the Ministry for Gozo says all roads on the island lead there, the bus terminal is in town and the Citadel sits above it, which makes it the most practical base for getting about by bus. Season and the ferry

Season matters even more here than on Malta. In 2024 occupancy in Gozo’s collective accommodation was 64.9% from July to September and 25.1% from January to March. In winter you’re spoilt for choice, and in early 2025 the Ministry even ran discounts of up to 30% on long stays; worth checking whether it’s repeated.

The Gozo Channel ferry leaves Ċirkewwa, takes around 25 minutes, can’t be booked and is paid on the way back, €4.65 return per passenger, while a car with its driver costs €15.70.
