Malta in October: still beach weather, and the cultural season begins

October is the month I’d point anyone to who wants the whole of Malta in one trip, beaches, cities and a bit of culture. The sea is still warm from the summer, the sun has stopped punishing you and the calendar fills with things to do that don’t involve a sun lounger. The one real change is that autumn storms start to turn up.

October weather, in numbers

The Malta Meteorological Office gives October a 21.7°C (71°F) mean and a 25.0°C (77°F) average high, with 217.7 hours of sunshine. That’s ideal for walking round Valletta or Mdina at any time of day. The rainfall norm rises to 77.6 mm, but the years vary enormously. October 2021 was the third wettest on the Met Office’s records, with 246 mm, while October 2023 was the driest since 1922.

I plan around it by leaving a day’s slack for anything sea-dependent, like a boat to Comino, and otherwise not worrying. Storms tend to be sharp and brief.

Still swimming at 24°C

This is what makes October special. The Met Office puts the sea at 24°C (75°F), and visitmalta says the peak beach season can run until mid to late October. The Blue Flag season set by the tourism authority for 2026 ends on 11 October, so after that don’t expect summer facilities on every beach. The water, though, is still there.

For UK families, October half-term is one of the few school breaks when Malta still feels like summer. Just bear in mind the half-term dates vary by council, and the bus and museum timetables switch over at the end of the month.

Notte Bianca and the opera season

The headline event is Notte Bianca. It’s a free Festivals Malta night held each year on October’s first Saturday, which in 2026 is the 3rd, from 18:00 to 23:50. Valletta’s streets, squares, churches, palaces and museums become stages, and plenty of cafés stay open late. Heritage Malta opens its sites in the capital for the night. If you can only pick one evening of the year in Valletta, this is a strong candidate.

In Gozo, October means opera, a tradition the Ministry for Gozo says goes back almost half a century. The 2026 season opens with La Traviata, staged by the Aurora on Saturday the 17th, marking the theatre’s 50th anniversary, and closes with Madama Butterfly, put on by the Astra on Thursday the 29th and Saturday the 31st, at 19:30. Both theatres are in Victoria, which I cover on Victoria, Gozo’s capital. The Ministry also mentions a kite festival at San Dimitri, near Għarb, held in October. I haven’t seen the 2026 date.

The Gozo programme around the operas is worth a look too. Visit Gozo lists the Ewfonija operatic concert at Villa Fiorita in Żebbuġ on 4 October, a piano recital in Victoria on the 8th and, from 18 October to 1 November, an exhibition on Joseph Cauchi’s thirty years as an opera set designer.

Forts, yachts and a night in the catacombs

Heritage Malta packs the month. On Saturday 17 October 2026 it opens Fort St Elmo to watch the Middle Sea Race, and on Sundays 18 and 25 it stages In Guardia, its historical re-enactment, which returns in November and December. On those days normal entry to the fort starts at 12:00. Details are on Fort St Elmo. On the 31st, Halloween, there’s an evening event at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat.

The last big festival of the month is Festivals Malta’s The Three Palaces, running 28 October to 1 November 2026. I haven’t seen this year’s venues or programme published. And an Egyptian exhibition opens in October at the National Museum of Archaeology, running until March.

What changes at the end of the month

October is a month of switchovers, and knowing them saves money and closed doors. Heritage Malta’s summer hours last until 31 October, with the temples and St Elmo open from 09:00 to 19:00; from 1 November they close at 17:00, a switch I cover in Malta in November. The clocks go back on the last Sunday, the 25th in 2026. And buses return to the winter fare, which in 2025 started on 19 October, with a €2 single.
