Floriana, Valletta's gateway suburb and its big concert stage

Floriana is one of those places that lives in the shadow of a famous neighbour. It sits on Valletta’s doorstep, on the landward side, and for plenty of visitors it’s just a name on a bus stop. Here’s what I know about it from official sources, which isn’t a great deal, and when I think it’s worth stopping.

A council of its own at the capital’s gates

Floriana, Il-Furjana in Maltese, has a local council of its own, one of 68 in the country, and belongs to the Southern Harbour district, like Valletta and the Three Cities. The NSO put its population at 2,043 on 31 December 2025, with 1,569 Maltese nationals and 474 foreign residents. A year earlier it was 2,066, so, like the capital next door, it’s slowly losing people. The full list of councils is on my page about towns and villages in Malta.

A fortress town named after an engineer

VisitMalta’s listing explains where the name comes from. Floriana is named after Pietro Floriani, the 17th-century military engineer the Knights commissioned in 1636 to extend Valletta’s fortifications. The town was conceived as a whole fortress city in front of the capital, and it lies within Valletta’s landward defences, which reach as far as the Porte des Bombes gateway on the main road in. The same listing describes it as a place of open spaces, gardens and some fine patrician houses, and that matches the feel of it, broader and greener than Valletta behind its walls.

The Granaries, Malta’s big outdoor stage

What puts Floriana on the map is the Granaries, Il Fosos in Maltese, the square the Malta Tourism Authority uses for its major open-air concerts. Isle of MTV Malta was held there on 22 July 2026, with Katy Perry, Afrojack and AIDAN, a free event the MTA bills as Europe’s biggest free summer festival. On 4 July 2026 the same space hosted the BBC Concert Orchestra, which gives you an idea of the range.

The square has a story underneath it, too. According to VisitMalta, the vast flagstoned Granaries Square hides a number of deep silos, built in the late 17th century to keep Valletta fed in wartime. Next time you see a concert crowd there, that’s what they’re standing on.

St Publius Church is the one in the photo at the top of this page, with its columned portico and two bell towers, and VisitMalta describes it as elegant and overlooking the Granaries. I don’t have an official source with its opening times, so I’ll simply say it’s the building that frames the square.

Gardens and the walk to Lascaris

Floriana is also home to the Herbert Ganado Gardens, which hosted a Biennale workshop in May 2026, according to Heritage Malta’s calendar. And there’s a practical use for this side of the walls that I find genuinely handy. From the bus terminus, the website of the Lascaris War Rooms in Valletta recommends walking through the Ganado Gardens. If you’re heading to Lascaris straight off the bus, this is your route.

VisitMalta picks out two more green spaces. The Argotti Gardens sit on St Philip’s Bastion, and the Mall, a narrow strip of garden that was once where the Knights played a kind of tennis, is now lined with statues and plaques to people and events from 20th-century Maltese history. I’d walk the Mall on the way into Valletta rather than make a separate trip for it.

Getting there and where to stay

Floriana has a stop on the tallinja Direct TD13, which links Valletta with Bugibba via St Julian’s and Qawra, under the name Floriana (Bombi 4). The Valletta bus terminus, where routes from across the island end, is a short walk away, so you won’t need anything else to get around.

As for where to sleep, I’m clear on this one. Valletta, Malta’s capital, is a few minutes away and has everything worth seeing within walking distance. I’d only stay in Floriana if I were coming for a concert at the Granaries and found somewhere that suited me. The MTA register does list one five-star hotel here, the Phoenicia, with 132 rooms. And if you arrive by cruise ship, you’re already in Floriana, since the cruise port gives its address at Pinto Wharf on the Valletta Waterfront, Floriana.
