Malta in August: the busiest month, the warmest sea and late nights

For a lot of British families, August is the only realistic window, and Malta at that time of year is hot, full and very much awake. The sea is at its warmest, the villages are celebrating and the evenings run late. Here’s what to expect and how I’d organise things so the heat doesn’t win.

Just how hot is August?

The Malta Meteorological Office gives August an average maximum of 32°C (90°F). That’s the average, not the ceiling, and heatwaves are routine. In 2021 the Met Office’s only red warning of the year ran from 9 to 12 August, with highs of 38 to 41°C. At the end of August 2026 there was an orange warning for a second heatwave of the summer.

Don’t count on rain. The Met Office starts its rainfall year in September precisely because summer leaves the islands almost bone dry. In practice that means parched countryside and sun from a cloudless sky from morning until late afternoon. The full-year numbers are on Malta weather. In the Maltese countryside the first drops are expected around St Bartholomew’s Day on the 24th, feast of the patron of Għargħur, and a folk saying ties the saint to the return of the rain.

The sea at its best

The Met Office recorded a 27.9°C sea in August 2022 and said it was 1.2°C above the norm, which puts a normal August sea at around 26.7°C (80°F). Hot years go well beyond that. At the end of August 2026 it measured 30°C (86°F), roughly three degrees above normal. This is the month to swim without a second thought, and also the one to watch for the purple flag, which the tourism authority uses to signal jellyfish.

Crowds, in numbers

In August 2025, 1,072,390 people passed through the airport, the highest figure of the year and more than double January’s 507,574. The tourism authority described July and August as a record-breaking season. I’d expect sandy beaches to fill by mid-morning and coastal buses to be packed. Official figures on hotel prices month by month don’t exist in anything I’ve read, but with that level of demand I’d book early.

Festas, gigs and a summer carnival

The evenings are the best of August. The 15th is the Santa Marija bank holiday, and many parishes dedicated to the Assumption hold their festa then. Victoria’s, in Gozo, is special because you can watch the fireworks from the Ċittadella walls. The Ministry for Gozo listed five festas on the island for August 2026, which you’ll find in the table, including Loreto in Għajnsielem, where Our Lady’s statue glides over the square on cables. In 2026 there were also two SummerDaze nights at the Ta’ Qali Concert Area, Lewis Capaldi on the 11th and Calvin Harris on the 15th, with tickets at €10. Festivals Malta took its free summer carnival to the seafronts of Buġibba and Marsaskala for three days, 21 to 23 August. Heritage Malta held an underwater heritage festival in Xlendi Bay on the 28th and 29th. Not one of them has announced 2027 dates.

If you like the sea beyond the sun lounger, Heritage Malta’s 2026 calendar had an open weekend at Xlendi Tower (15 and 16 August) and a boat trip along the Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs from Buġibba jetty (16 August). Places are limited and announced on its website, and the format tends to repeat, so keep an eye on its programme once it’s out.

Surviving a Maltese August

My rule is simple. Anything outdoors happens before eleven or after five. Heritage Malta’s temples open at 09:00 on summer hours, and the Ċittadella or Mdina are far more pleasant in the evening light. In between, water, shade and an air-conditioned museum. Carry water everywhere, especially at open-air sites.

If you’re staying outside Valletta, think about the bus. A single fare is €2.50 in summer and the beach routes fill up. An Explore Flex card saves paying each time, but it won’t save you the wait. One small consolation is that the MTA keeps demolition and digging out of its listed tourist streets until 30 September, so there’s less building noise near the coast.
