Golden Bay, northern Malta's sandy favourite

Golden Bay is the beach that comes up whenever someone searches for sand in Malta, and it’s easy to see why. In a country whose coast is mostly rock, a sandy bay with a direct bus from the capital is a magnet. Which is exactly why it pays to go with a plan.

A sandy beach in a rocky country

The Spanish Foreign Ministry sums it up well in its travel advice. Most Maltese beaches are rocky, and sand is concentrated in the north of the main island and on Gozo. Golden Bay is the best known of that northern stretch, on the north-west coast near Mellieħa. No official source I’ve read says which local council it belongs to, so I’ll stick with “near Mellieħa”.

What is documented is that it sits beside the Majjistral Nature and History Park. The park’s page on VisitMalta explains where the sand on this coast comes from. There’s clay under the limestone, the waves wear it away, the rock collapses into boulder scree, and the sand released by that erosion washes up in the north-west’s bays. The same page says that both sides of the valley overlooking Golden Bay, ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa in Maltese, have entrenchments the Knights built in the early 18th century to defend the coast. That changes how I see the beach. It isn’t just a stretch of sand, it’s the doorway to one of the island’s last undeveloped bits of coastline.

What you’ll find at Golden Bay

I have little official material here and would rather say so. Wikipedia says it was once called Military Bay, that there are lifeguards in summer, beach clubs and a large hotel, and that it has a bus terminus and parking. That’s a secondary source, so treat it as a guide rather than a promise.

What the Malta Tourism Authority does publish is the flag code for lifeguarded beaches, and I’d learn it before heading down. Red over yellow marks the lifeguarded zone, green is calm sea, yellow medium hazard, red high hazard, double red no swimming, and purple means jellyfish. One more thing worth knowing from the Spanish Foreign Ministry’s advice. Neither nudism nor topless sunbathing is permitted in Malta.

On the Blue Flag, I can’t give you a 2026 answer either, because the MTA hasn’t published the list. I do know this year’s Blue Flag season runs from 29 May to 11 October, and that the MTA is putting in more boardwalks, carpet paths, beach buggies that carry wheelchairs over the sand and hoist chairs for getting into the sea. Worth knowing if anyone in your group has limited mobility, and worth asking about on arrival.

When should you go to Golden Bay?

Early or late. July and August are Malta’s peak season, with the airport handling twice as many passengers in August as in January, and a sandy beach with a direct bus from Valletta feels it. I’d be on the sand before ten or after five. In the evening this coast is also good for sunsets (Malta Public Transport says as much of neighbouring Għajn Tuffieħa), which is when the beach’s name makes most sense.

If you arrive and it’s heaving, don’t despair. Għajn Tuffieħa is right next door, and Malta Public Transport describes it as a sandy beach less crowded than Golden Bay, with clifftop walks and good sunsets. Along the same west coast, Ġnejna Bay is another quieter sandy option.

Getting to Golden Bay by bus

It’s one of the best-connected beaches in the country. Malta Public Transport gives bus 44 from Valletta’s terminus to Golden Bay. From Ċirkewwa and Mellieħa there’s route 101, which also calls at Popeye Village and Għadira Bay, and the 223 links it with Buġibba. With the 101 you can put together a full northern day, Golden Bay in the morning, Popeye Village at lunchtime if you’ve got children, and Għadira Bay in the afternoon.

Golden Bay against the rest

For me, Golden Bay is the most convenient sandy beach on the island of Malta if you don’t have a car, but not the prettiest. If you’re after the best, I’d compare it with Għadira and with the beaches on Gozo first. My complete ranking sits in best beaches in Malta.
