Paceville, the party hill between Spinola and St George's

Paceville is the hill in St Julian’s where Malta goes out at night. I’ll put it plainly because that’s what nearly everyone typing its name is after. My view is simple. It’s a good place for a big night and a poor place to sleep if you aren’t looking for one.

What it is and where

Visit Malta places Paceville on the hill between Spinola Bay and St George’s Bay and describes it as the scene of Malta’s nightlife all year round. It mentions clubs playing the latest DJ music, piano bars, restaurants and an elegant casino in Villa Dragonara, formerly the private home of a 19th-century Maltese aristocrat. Malta Public Transport sums it up as the island’s premier nightlife destination.

It isn’t a local council. It’s part of St Julian’s, Malta, even though the Malta Tourism Authority lists it separately in its accommodation register.

Is Paceville safe for a night out?

This is where I want to be straight with you. Malta has little crime, and the FCDO says crime against tourists is rare. But the same advice flags drink spiking in the area’s clubs and bars, and Spain’s foreign ministry goes further, rating the Paceville and St Julian’s nightlife area medium risk because of assaults, theft and drug-assisted attacks.

Staying in Paceville, good idea?

On 28 September 2026 the MTA credited Paceville with 22 licensed hotels, four guesthouses, three hostels and 301 holiday lets. Fourteen of the hotels are three-star and two are five-star, the Westin Dragonara and the Hilton, listed on Triq id-Dragunara and Vjal Portomaso.

If you’re out every night, sleeping here saves on taxis. If not, I’d avoid it, because the bars close late and at weekends the street never settles. Spinola and St George’s Bay are a few minutes’ walk away, and I compare the options in hotels in St Julian’s.

Getting there and getting back

By day, the TD2 from the airport calls at Ganado, Paceville and Dragonara half-hourly for €3, while the TD13 links St Julian’s with Valletta one way and Qawra and Buġibba the other. In the small hours, Malta Public Transport runs night routes and a night-time On Demand service you request in the tallinja app, choosing the pick-up and drop-off points.

For a taxi, Spain’s foreign ministry notes that the licensed ones are white and often don’t run the meter, so ask the fare before you get in. Private cab firms and ride-hailing apps operate too. I’d book a car on an app before leaving the club, rather than haggle on the pavement at three in the morning.
