Time in Malta: an hour ahead of the UK, with the same clock changes

Time in Malta is refreshingly simple for a British visitor. The island is one hour ahead of the UK, and it stays one hour ahead all year, because both countries put their clocks forward and back on the same Sundays. Set your watch when you land and that’s it. What’s worth getting used to is the rhythm of the day, with shops shutting at lunchtime and museums trimming their hours in winter.

What time zone is Malta in?

Central European Time. In winter that’s one hour ahead of Greenwich, UTC+1, and in summer two hours ahead, UTC+2, as the Malta Tourism Authority sets out in its FAQs. The Government of Malta’s official profile simply gives it as “GMT +1”, the winter reference.

For comparison, the UK runs on Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time in summer, according to gov.uk. So when it’s noon in London, it’s 1pm in Valletta, whatever the month.

When do the clocks change?

On the same days as the rest of the EU. Directive 2000/84/EC requires every member state to put the clocks forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October. On that rule, Malta’s next change is on 25 October 2026, when winter time returns (along with everything else that changes that month, see Malta in October), followed by 28 March and 31 October 2027. The UK changes on those same Sundays, according to gov.uk, which is why the one-hour gap never moves. The European Commission proposed ending seasonal clock changes back in 2018, but the Council still hasn’t settled its position.

If you’re flying home that weekend, check the time of your flight and your last ferry carefully. It’s the classic day for turning up an hour early or an hour late for everything.

Flights, arrivals and the hour you gain

Airport boards in both countries show local time, which matters for late flights. A plane touching down in Malta at 00:55 local time left the UK before 23:00 British time, and on the way home you gain the hour back. If your flight lands after midnight, it’s worth booking somewhere with late or self check-in, and I’d check the Airport Direct buses before relying on one; there’s more in Malta airport.

The opening hours you do need to adjust to

This is where Malta has its own habits. According to Spain’s Foreign Ministry, shops on weekdays tend to trade in two stretches, a morning one until 13:00 and an afternoon one from 16:00 until 19:30, plus Saturday mornings until 12:30, with most closed on Sundays and public holidays. Shopping centres and chains don’t close at lunchtime, and in tourist areas some shops open around the clock. Banks are a morning affair, and on Saturdays they shut before lunch.

Heritage Malta sites run on two timetables. Until 31 October they open 09:00 to 19:00 or 10:00 to 18:00, depending on the site, and from 1 November they switch to 09:00 to 17:00, with the ticket desk closing thirty minutes before the galleries. That 1 November switch is the first thing I flag in Malta in November. They all shut for New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Valletta’s finest clock

If I had to pick one time of day in Malta, it would be 12:00. That’s when the gun fires at the Saluting Battery in the Upper Barrakka Gardens, above the Grand Harbour, and it fires again at 16:00. The battery itself suggests arriving a quarter of an hour early.

Buses, ferries and the clock

Timings matter most on transport. A single bus ticket lasts two hours with changes, and, as Spain’s Foreign Ministry points out, the night fare applies after 11pm. The Gozo Channel ferry changes its timetable by season, and the operator gives 8 November 2026 as the end date of the current one, so if you’re travelling later, check the new times before planning your return.

How much daylight is there?

I haven’t found an official table of sunrise and sunset times. What Visit Malta does publish is the sunshine, around 12 hours a day in summer and 5 to 6 in mid-winter. With so few sunny hours in December and January, I’d start sightseeing early and keep the indoor sights for the afternoon.
