Malta in July: dry heat, warm sea and a village feast every weekend

If you’re picturing a British summer holiday with guaranteed sunshine, Malta in July is exactly that, turned up a notch. The sea is warm, the evenings are long and the villages are in party mode. The trade-off is heat and crowds, and it’s worth going in with your eyes open.

How hot does it get?

The Malta Meteorological Office, which measures at Luqa, gives July a mean temperature of 26.9°C (80°F) on its 1991-2020 norm. That figure includes the nights, so afternoons are a good deal warmer. Rain is close to non-existent, and visitmalta reckons on about twelve hours of sunshine a day in summer.

The number I’d keep in mind is a different one. July 2023 was the hottest month in the Met Office’s records, averaging 29.6°C (85°F), and a ten-day heatwave that month peaked at 42.7°C (109°F). It doesn’t happen every year, but it does happen. If you’re travelling with young children or older relatives, make air conditioning a non-negotiable and don’t plan long walks in full sun. Sea temperature and beach days

This is where July shines. The Met Office recorded 27.9°C in the sea in July 2022 and said that was 2.7°C above normal, which puts a typical July sea at around 25°C (77°F). You can stay in as long as you like.

The MTA set the 2026 Blue Flag season from 29 May until 11 October. If Comino’s Blue Lagoon is on your list, you’ve needed a free timed booking since 2025, and July is when it matters most. What’s on in July

For me, July’s real appeal is after dark. It’s the height of the festa season, when each village celebrates its patron saint with decorated streets, brass bands and a fireworks finale. Gozo’s Ministry listed one every Sunday in July 2026, in Għarb on the 5th, Kerċem on the 12th, St George’s in Victoria on the 19th and St Margaret’s in Sannat on the 26th. Festivals Malta adds two headline events. The Malta Jazz Festival ran from 6 to 11 July 2026 and has already announced 5 to 10 July 2027, in Valletta. Dance Festival Malta filled 23 to 26 July 2026. And on 22 July 2026 the tourism authority staged Isle of MTV, a free open-air concert in Il Fosos Square headlined by Katy Perry. Everything I know about it is on Isle of MTV Malta.

Heritage Malta runs a summer programme too. In July 2026 there were boat trips to Filfla from Sliema, a night-time ghost tour at Fort St Angelo and a ftira workshop at the Inquisitor’s Palace. Its 2027 calendar isn’t out yet.

Crowds and costs

Nothing official I’ve read gives hotel prices by month, so I won’t make any up. What I do have is traffic. The airport handled 1,035,341 passengers in July 2025, against 507,574 in January, and the MTA counted over 385,000 tourists that month, up more than 18 per cent on the year before. With that sort of demand, booking flights and a room well ahead is simply sensible.

Two 2026 changes hit your wallet. From 1 July, each adult pays a €1.50 nightly eco-contribution, capped at €22.50 a stay. And buses are on the summer fare, €2.50 for a single. One perk hardly anyone mentions is that from 15 June to 30 September 2026 building sites in the MTA’s listed tourist streets can’t demolish or dig, so building-site noise is less of a problem near the beaches.

Coming from the UK

A couple of things make July easy for a British visitor. The plug is the same three-pin type at 230 V, traffic keeps left, and English is one of Malta’s two official languages, which makes the practical side familiar. Bring a GHIC for medically necessary state healthcare and proper travel insurance on top.

How I’d plan a July day

Early start for anything outdoors. Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra let visitors in from 09:00 in summer, which is when they’re at their best. Late morning to mid-afternoon, the sea, with shade and plenty of water. Valletta’s air-conditioned museums are a good plan for the hottest hours. Evenings are for a festa, a concert or dinner on the seafront.
