Triq Bernardo DeOpuo, Victoria Citadel

Gran Castello Historic House, life inside the Citadel three centuries ago

Gran Castello Historic House is a cluster of interconnected houses on Bernardo DeOpuo Street, inside the Citadel in Victoria, Gozo, turned into a museum in 1983. It recreates 18th-century urban domestic life, with an animal-driven mill and weaving demonstrations. Entry is €5, and it's also part of the Citadel combo ticket.

I wouldn't pay for it on its own. The Citadel combo costs €5 and adds the Old Prison and the visitor centre, so the house and the prison take an hour and a half and it's the best money you'll spend in the Citadel.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

Two museums for the price of one

The Citadel combo is €5 for adults, the same as this house alone, and includes the Old Prison and the visitor centre.

  2. 02 Most beautiful

    A mill turned by animals

On the ground floor of the central house a large mill room holds a beast-driven mill, the kind turned by an animal walking in circles.

  3. 03 My tip

Summer Wednesdays, the loom at work

From July to September, on Wednesdays from 11am to 1pm, a weaver demonstrates the craft with traditional tools. It's included in the ticket.

Most people do Gozo’s Citadel from the outside, rampart to rampart, looking down on the island. I’d spend some time going into its houses, and the best door to try is the Gran Castello Historic House. It’s a cluster of linked homes on Bernardo DeOpuo Street that Heritage Malta is gradually returning to the look of an 18th-century town house, and nowhere else gets you closer to how people lived inside those walls.

Wealthy family homes inside the fortress

The houses show Sicilian and Catalan influences and some very fine Late Gothic detailing. Because of that quality, Heritage Malta believes they belonged to well-off families, though it admits it knows little about who lived there. There were several owners, who held and let out different parts of the cluster, and for a while they may have worked as a single house. They became a museum in 1983.

What I like about that uncertainty is that the visit doesn’t tell you one person’s story, but a way of life. For the fortress itself, see Gozo’s Citadel.

What’s inside?

The ground floor and mezzanine of the southern house recreate a historic home, with its work areas and the servants’ quarters. The ground floor of the central house is given over to rural trades, mainly farming, and a large room in the middle holds a beast-driven mill. On the first floor, where the families lived, there’s period furniture and items from domestic crafts such as weaving, including the cotton gin and the spinning wheel.

Heritage Malta lists the rooms it has identified, a kitchen, bedrooms, dining rooms, storerooms, the mill room, a study, a children’s room, a washroom and a weaving room. There’s also an audiovisual show on how this cluster looked in the late Middle Ages and a garden to rest in at the end.

If you’re there in summer, go on a Wednesday. From July to September, between 11am and 1pm, a weaver demonstrates the craft with traditional tools, and it’s included in the ticket.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Gran Castello Historic House and choose by the reviews.

Tickets, combo and hours

Bought alone, the house costs an adult €5, with seniors and students paying €3.50 and children €2.50. But the Citadel combo costs exactly the same and adds the Old Prison in Gozo and the visitor centre, so buying the house alone makes no sense. If you’re also going to Ġgantija, the Discover Gozo combo, at €13, bundles the temples, Ta’ Kola Windmill and the Citadel sites. I cover the mill in Ta’ Kola Windmill.

It rests on Mondays and, up to 3 January 2027, welcomes visitors from nine in the morning until five. After that, through to the end of February 2027, it shuts on Wednesdays as well. The nearest bus stop is about five minutes’ walk away. Not every room can be reached in a wheelchair.

The order I’d do it in

I’d head up to the Citadel early, walk the walls while the light is good, then go into the Old Prison and this house on the combo ticket. For the rest of the day in the island’s capital, see Victoria.

A group of linked houses inside Gozo's Citadel, made into a museum in 1983, which Heritage Malta is gradually reshaping to show 18th-century urban home life.

How much does it cost?

€5 for adults. For the same price the Citadel combo also covers the Old Prison and the visitor centre, so that's what I'd buy.

Which rooms can you see?

A kitchen, bedrooms, dining rooms, storerooms, the mill room, a study, a children's room, a washroom and a weaving room, according to Heritage Malta.

Who owned these houses?

Heritage Malta believes they belonged to wealthy families, given the quality of the architecture, which shows Sicilian and Catalan influences and refined Late Gothic work. Little more is known about the owners.

Is it accessible?

Only partly. Heritage Malta says some areas aren't fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.
