Buġibba, the square and seafront of St Paul's Bay

Buġibba has a poor reputation among people hunting for picture-postcard Malta, and a good one among families who’ve spent a week there by the pool. Both views are fair. It’s the resort heart of San Pawl il-Baħar, the council around St Paul’s Bay, and it works like a small holiday town with a square, a seafront and a bus terminus. What follows is how to make the most of it without getting stuck there.

What Buġibba is, and isn’t

Malta Public Transport pairs it with St Paul’s Bay as one of Malta’s most popular coastal areas, known for nightlife, restaurants, bars and a lively promenade. It lists three things to see, the National Aquarium, Buġibba Square as a hub of bars and cafés, and the seafront itself. That short list tells you plenty.

What it isn’t is a historic town. There are no bastions or baroque palaces, and I’ve no problem with that as long as you arrive knowing it. Think of it as a place to sleep, swim, eat without breaking the bank and set off on day trips. Nor is it small, since the council it belongs to has more residents than anywhere else in Malta.

Square, promenade and sea

Life revolves round the square and the promenade along the bay. The shore here is mostly rock, with places to get into the water along the front, which is typical of an island where sand is the exception rather than the rule. For real sand, the 223 takes you to Golden Bay, and from there you can walk over to Għajn Tuffieħa.

A short walk towards the point brings you to Qawra and the National Aquarium. With children it’s the easiest afternoon out, and online tickets for entry after 16:00 are cheaper.

The bus terminus is your best friend

This is the practical reason to choose Buġibba. The terminus has an official sales point for tickets and travel cards, where you can pick up an Explore Flex card if you’ll be travelling a lot. For Valletta you have the 31, 45 and 48, plus the limited-stop TD13 via St Julian’s; from St Julian’s you come back on the 212 or TD13. For Mellieħa there’s the 221, 222 and TD1, and the 221 continues to Ċirkewwa for the Gozo ferry.

The TD1 runs to the airport every hour for €3.50. If you land in the small hours, check the last departure before relying on it.

Day trips I’d plan from here

A day in Valletta on the TD13, leaving early. A morning in Mosta for the Rotunda, one bus away. A beach day in the west on the 223. And a day on Gozo, either via Ċirkewwa or on the fast boat Gozo Highspeed schedules from Buġibba, around 30 minutes according to its timetable for 1 October 2026. I haven’t seen its single fare published, so check the operator’s site.

If you’ve an afternoon spare, don’t leave without seeing the Salina reserve on the far side of Qawra. It’s free, has a small salt museum and is the most unexpected thing on this hotel-lined coast.

Who Buġibba suits

Families wanting a pool and a kitchenette, couples after a week by the sea without spending much, and anyone travelling in July or August, when staying in the capital or Sliema gets pricey. The council has 1,135 MTA-licensed holiday lets, the most in Malta, and plenty of large hotels, all compared in my round-up of hotels in Buġibba and Qawra. If it’s a sightseeing weekend, though, I’d stay elsewhere.

What I’d bear in mind

Two things. First, noise, since the square is the centre of the nightlife and you’ll notice it in summer; if you’re a light sleeper, pick a side street. Second, bus time, which is the real cost of staying here. It pays off if you head out two or three times a week, not if you want to shuttle to Valletta every day.
