Christmas at the Vatican, from Christmas Eve Mass to the crib in the square

Christmas at the Vatican sounds like a greetings card, and done properly it more or less is. Everything that matters is free. What takes effort is the planning, because the Mass everyone wants needs a ticket, the square fills up two days running and the museums shut just as the rest of Europe arrives in Rome. Here’s how Christmas 2025, Leo XIV’s first, actually ran, what’s already confirmed for 2026 and how I’d go about it.

Midnight Mass that isn’t at midnight

A lot of people still picture the bells at twelve, and that hasn’t been the case for years. The Pope’s Christmas Eve Mass was at midnight until 2009, when Benedict XVI brought it forward, and after the pandemic it was held at 19:00. Leo XIV celebrated it at 22:00 on 24 December 2025 in St Peter’s Basilica. A year earlier, on Christmas Eve 2024, Francis had opened the Holy Door there for the Jubilee.

The basilica wasn’t big enough. The Pope went out to greet the crowd following from the square and told them, in English, that St Peter’s is very large but unfortunately not large enough to receive them all. For planning purposes I find that reassuring, because it shows you can share the night without a seat, even if you’re outside. The Holy See hasn’t published its 2026 Christmas timetable yet, so I’d treat 22:00 as a guide, not a promise.

How do you get a ticket for the Pope’s Christmas Mass?

The same way as for any celebration he leads. They cost nothing, and you apply online to the Prefecture of the Papal Household, which also issues the Wednesday audience tickets, and you have to register before you can apply. The portal won’t show its instructions until you have an account, so I’d sign up as soon as my dates were fixed and put the request in the day the celebration appears.

What I wouldn’t do is pay for one. A papal Mass isn’t sold, and anyone charging you is selling a guide, a transfer or a bit of admin you can do yourself. The rest of the options for seeing Leo XIV are in how to see the Pope at the Vatican.

The 25th, Mass in the morning and Urbi et Orbi at noon

Christmas Day 2025 had two moments. At 10:00, the Christmas Day Mass inside the basilica. At noon, the Urbi et Orbi blessing, «to the city and to the world», given from the Central Loggia, the balcony in the middle of the façade, with the square spread out below. It’s the picture everyone has in their head, and the square is where you see it.

One honest caveat. A papal Mass needs a ticket, that much is clear, but I haven’t found any official wording saying if you need anything just to stand in the square for the blessing. I’d arrive very early, clear the police screening point on the right of the square in good time and not count on getting close. The crib and the tree in the square

Since 1982, under John Paul II, the square has had a nativity scene, donated each year by a different region. For Christmas 2025 the tree was a 25-metre Norway spruce weighing 8 tonnes from the Val d’Ultimo near Bolzano, and the crib, from the diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, was 17 metres long. Both were unveiled on the evening of Monday 15 December. Indoors, in the Paul VI Hall, stood a second crib from Costa Rica.

What I like is that 2026 is already announced. The archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto is making it with the crib builders of Atessa in Abruzzo, with straw-roofed huts like old farm shelters, terracotta shepherds dressed in rough cloth and sheepskins and, among the flock, a black sheep. The Governorate explains that it doesn’t mean misfortune here, it stands for whoever has strayed and is wanted back. The tree will be a silver fir of about 25 metres from the Cugno dell’Acero wood in the Pollino, and the crib in the hall a seafaring one by the Viareggio Carnival Foundation, with the Three Kings recast as fishermen.

It all stays up until the end of the Christmas season, which last time meant 11 January. The colonnade, the obelisk and everything else around the crib are in St Peter’s Square.

What shuts over Christmas, and how I’d plan round it

This is where most trips go wrong. The Vatican Museums close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and on 24 and 31 December they only let people in from 08:00 to 13:00. They’re shut on 8 December too. Sunday 27 December 2026, on the other hand, is a last Sunday of the month, so entry is free between 09:00 and 14:00. The necropolis is closed on the 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 31st, and the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo on the 25th and 26th. Given five days, I’d do the museums on the 23rd or the 28th, when they run full hours, keep Christmas Eve for the Mass or the square, and spend the 25th on the blessing and a wander round Borgo. I’d see the crib by night on another evening, because the square stays open and it’s twice as pleasant without the crowds.
