Vatican opening times, from St Peter's to Castel Gandolfo

Most people look up Vatican opening hours as if it were one museum with one door. It’s a cluster of doors, each on its own clock. The basilica, the museums, the dome, the Grottoes, the necropolis and even the post office keep separate hours, and Sunday rearranges almost all of them. The full table is above. Here’s how I’d read it, and the time I’d turn up at each place.

When does the Vatican open in the morning?

First to open is St Peter’s Basilica, at 07:00 every day. Its website gives those hours “all year”, through to 20:00, although the timetable page labels them as valid “from 1 June” and says nothing about winter. I’d take them at face value and double-check from late October. The dome opens at the same time, 07:00, while summer hours last.

The Vatican Museums follow at 08:00, Monday to Saturday, with online entry slots every half hour. At 08:30 the two post offices that matter to visitors open, one in the square and one inside the museums. And at 09:00 it’s the turn of the Vatican Grottoes and the necropolis, the one visit where you don’t pick the time, because the excavations office assigns your slot.

Closing times are the ones that catch people out

This is where plenty of days go wrong. The museums close at 20:00, but last entry is 18:00 and staff start clearing the galleries at 19:30. The dome shuts at 18:00 until 25 October 2026, and last winter it shut at 17:00. The Grottoes close at 18:00 as well, every day.

The necropolis finishes earliest. On weekdays the last tour sets off at 16:15, and on Saturdays at 12:15. The basilica holds out longest, until 20:00, which is why I’d always save it for the end of the day.

The time I’d pick for each visit

In high season I’d take the first museum slot, 08:00, because the route runs to seven kilometres and I’d rather reach the Sistine Chapel with fresh legs. The basilica I’d see either at 07:00, if you only have the morning, or late in the afternoon, once the dome has closed and the light starts to soften on the façade.

I’d do the climb up the dome early in winter, because a 17:00 close eats into the afternoon fast, and at any time in summer, provided you arrive with room for the hour it usually takes. The Grottoes come straight after the nave. And the postcard goes in at the office in the square before 18:30.

Two slots I’d avoid unless you’re there for the Pope are Wednesday morning and Sunday lunchtime. That isn’t just my view, the basilica itself lists them as its busiest times.

The awkward calendar for the rest of 2026

The museums are free on the last Sundays, which from October to December 2026 land on the 25th in October, the 29th in November and the 27th in December, from 09:00 to 14:00. They shut on 8 December and on 25 and 26 December, and 24 and 31 December are short days, with entry only until 13:00. On the morning of 29 September the Anima Mundi ethnological museum stays shut until 11:30.

The necropolis closes on 1 and 2 November and on six days in December, between the 8th and the 31st. If you’re eyeing it for Christmas, I’d ask for another date. And 18 November marks the end of the basilica’s 400th-anniversary year, when Leo XIV presides over a solemn Mass. No change to opening hours has been announced, but I’d expect bigger crowds and slower security that day.

The Pope keeps his own timetable

The Wednesday papal audience has no official published start, but on 23 September 2026 the Pope reached the square shortly before 10:00. The Sunday Angelus is at 12:00 sharp, from the window of his study. Neither has a fixed calendar for the rest of the year, and Leo XIV is due in South America (Uruguay, Argentina and Peru) from 6 to 17 November 2026.

Masses in the basilica do have a published timetable. On weekdays the first is at 07:00 and the last at 18:00, and on holy days they run from 07:00 to 17:00.

Castel Gandolfo, where Tuesday is a write-off

Outside Rome, the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo runs on its own calendar. From now until December it closes every Tuesday, plus 1 November and 25 and 26 December. On weekdays entry runs from 09:00 to 13:00, with closing at 14:30. On Saturdays in October entry stretches to 17:00, and on Saturdays in November and December to 16:00, while on Sundays you get in from 10:00 to 17:00.

So a Tuesday is the worst day for the trip and a Saturday in October the best. Opening times for every Poste Vaticane office, including the ones away from the square, are in Vatican post office and stamps.
