Going to Mass in St Peter's Basilica, with times and no ticket

Almost everyone treats St Peter’s like a museum, with the queue, the audio guide and the photo of the Pietà. But it’s a church with Mass nearly every hour, and going to one is the best way I know of seeing it differently. It costs nothing, there’s no booking, and you sit in places tour groups only file past. Below are the official times and my tips for using them.

St Peter’s Mass times

The Fabbrica di San Pietro publishes a fixed timetable. On weekdays the Altar of St Joseph has four morning Masses, at 07:00, 07:30, 09:00 and 10:00. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel has the 08:30, after which adoration continues until 18:45. And the Altar of the Chair has two late-morning and two early-evening Masses, listed in the table above.

Sundays and feast days are slightly different. St Joseph’s altar has the two earliest, and the Chair everything from 09:00 onwards, including the 10:30 chapter Mass and three more later in the day. In the Choir Chapel there’s also Lauds at 09:45 and chapter Vespers at 17:00. The basilica is open from 07:00 to 20:00, and big papal celebrations can change the timetable.

Do you need a ticket for Mass?

Not for the daily Masses. They’re free, and you only pass the security check in the square, the same as for visiting the basilica. Worshippers even get their own way in, the ‘Percorso Oranti’, with yellow signs from Via di Porta Angelica and access via the Vatican Grottoes. Fabbrica staff run it twelve hours a day.

Which Mass I’d choose

It depends what you’re after. For silence and the basilica almost to yourself, the 07:00 or the 07:30. The groups haven’t arrived yet, and if you’re going on to the Museums you can walk to Viale Vaticano afterwards. If the setting matters most, the 11:00 at the Altar of the Chair, with Bernini’s work in front of you and the baldachin framing it. On Sunday, the 10:30 chapter Mass is the most solemn of the week. And if you want something more intimate, the 08:30 in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, which leads into adoration.

The pope’s Masses are something else

This is where many people get confused. The daily Masses at St Peter’s aren’t said by the pope but by the basilica’s priests. Papal Masses are announced in the calendar of papal celebrations, are occasional and need a free ticket requested in advance through the Prefecture of the Papal Household’s portal. If anyone sells you one, be wary.

Confession and a 2026 extra

Confession is available every day, morning and afternoon, with the exact times in the table above. And one detail from the basilica’s 400th anniversary, marked in 2026. Vatican News announced an app with simultaneous translation of the liturgy into 60 languages, aimed precisely at people attending without Italian.

If your trip coincides with a family occasion, a christening, a wedding or an anniversary, you might like to request a papal blessing parchment, which is arranged at the Vatican itself.

Mass and the rest of your visit

An early Mass fits the rest of the day nicely. Afterwards, the Vatican Grottoes open at 09:00 and are free, and the dome opens at 07:00 on summer hours and 07:30 in winter. The Museums start letting visitors in at 08:00, so you can go to Mass at 07:00 and enter in the first slot afterwards.

There are two days I’d avoid if you want calm. Wednesday, for the audience, and Sunday, for the Angelus, which the basilica itself calls its busiest days. If those are your only options, the first Mass of the morning is still the best bet.
