Rome to Castel Gandolfo by train, with times and the bus to the Villas

Getting from Rome to Castel Gandolfo is cheap and simple, but there’s a timetable trap that hardly any guide mentions. The regional train runs often in the afternoon and barely at all mid-morning, which is exactly when you need it if you want the palace before it shuts. I’ve gone through the real times on Trenitalia’s journey planner for a week in October 2026, and this is how I’d set it up, including the bus that runs up to the Papal Villas. The FL4 regional from Termini

Castel Gandolfo has a station on Trenitalia’s FL4 line, on the branch from Roma Termini to Albano Laziale. The stops on the way are Capannelle, Ciampino, Acqua Acetosa, Sassone, Pantanella and Marino Laziale, and after Castel Gandolfo only Villetta and Albano remain. Check the destination board carefully, because the FL4 has two other branches, to Frascati and to Velletri, and neither calls at Castel Gandolfo.

A single is €2.10 and direct trains take between 38 and 45 minutes, usually 41. You can buy it on the Trenitalia website or app, from the station machines, at the ticket office or at a tobacconist. At that fare, I wouldn’t bother with a private transfer.

What time do trains to Castel Gandolfo leave?

Here’s the catch. On weekdays, direct trains leave Termini at 05:42, 07:21, 08:21 and 09:00, and then there’s nothing direct until 12:21. The 10:28 involves a change and arrives at 11:21. From 12:21 things settle into one train an hour, always at 21 minutes past, until 21:21. Saturday follows the same pattern from 08:21, while Sunday is different, with departures at 08:21, 10:00 and 11:17 and then roughly hourly.

If you’re heading for the Papal Palace, where weekday last entry is 13:00, missing the 09:00 leaves you very little room. So the 08:21 is the train I’d catch.

Coming back on weekdays, there are direct trains at 17:51, 18:51, 19:51, 20:51 and 21:48, plus a 22:42 with a change that gets into Termini at 23:34. On Sundays they run at 17:51, 18:41, 19:51, 21:52 and 22:41. These are the planner’s times for the first week of October. They change in December and during engineering works, so check trenitalia.com before you set off.

The Castel Gandolfo Link bus, €1 to the Villas

The station lies below the town centre, and on arrival you face a climb on foot. What few people realise is that Trenitalia sells a bus that spares you the hill. It’s called the Castel Gandolfo Link, it’s run by Schiaffini Travel, and it leaves from the station forecourt for the Papal Villas stop. It runs Monday to Saturday, costs €1 with no discounts and can’t be bought on its own. You add it to your train ticket by choosing “Castel Gandolfo Ville Pontificie” as your destination, and the combined fare is €3.10.

The drawback is the timetable. Outbound, it only meets the 08:21 train, reaching the Villas at 09:14, and the 09:00, reaching them at 09:56. Coming back, it leaves the Villas at 11:30, 13:30, 14:30 and 17:30. There’s no Sunday service. Those times suit a day with the palace in the morning and the Villa Barberini gardens after lunch rather well.

What about the train from the Vatican?

It did exist, and it was a lovely way to arrive. The Vatican Museums ran a Saturday train from the state’s own station, and the last season I can find documented is 2022. In September 2026 it isn’t on sale at the official ticket office, even though the Papal Villas website still mentions it. What’s known about that station and its train is in Vatican City’s railway station. Today, the regional from Termini is the way, and a far cheaper one.

How I’d plan it

The 08:21 on a combined ticket, the palace at opening, lunch in town or down by Lake Albano, the Villa Barberini gardens early in the afternoon and the last bus at 17:30 to meet the 17:51 train. On a Tuesday, swap the palace for the gardens, which open that morning, and give the afternoon to the lake. And if you’re slotting it into a short break in Rome, I’d make it day two, as I suggest in the Vatican in two days.
