Sass Café, the old-school night out on avenue Princesse Grace

Some Monaco venues change their name every few summers, and then there’s Sass Café, which has been on avenue Princesse Grace since 1993. It’s a restaurant, piano bar and club in the same room, and that’s exactly the draw, dinner with live musicians and no need to move when the night picks up. To me it’s Monaco’s most old-school night out, and here’s how it works.

A nickname that became an institution

The name comes from its founder, Salvador Treves, known as «Sassa». He and his wife, Yolande, opened it in 1993 and turned it into a fashionable celebrity haunt, and their son, Samy, joined in 1997. It’s still a family business, and the house makes a point of that family welcome.

Over the years the brand has left the Principality. There’s a seasonal Sass’ in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, that opens in winter; another in Bucharest; and a beach restaurant, Cabana Sass’, in Portugal’s Algarve. But this is the original, at 11 avenue Princesse Grace, the avenue linking Monte-Carlo with Larvotto.

Velvet, leopard print and crystal chandeliers

The décor is part of the deal. G&M Design Monaco came up with burgundy, black and leopard print on velvet and leather, a look repeated in every Sass’ around the world. The place was fully refurbished in 2019 and now has a warm-toned terrace with a jungle feel and a baroque indoor room under glittering chandeliers. At the back there’s a private lounge for small celebrations.

It’s a style you’ll either love or find too much, and I think it’s worth knowing that beforehand. If you’re after something minimalist, look elsewhere.

What’s a night at Sass Café like?

According to its website, it opens every night from 20:30. Dinner is Mediterranean with an international twist, and Visit Monaco spells it out as salads, pastas, risottos, fish and meat, with wines chosen by the sommelier and house cocktails. There’s live music over dinner, and as the evening goes on the musicians turn it up.

Around 1:00 the room becomes a club. The DJs take over and the party runs into the small hours, with a club list of Champagne, vodka, tequila and liqueurs. The trick, and what I’d go for, is to dine late and already be seated when that switch happens.

A word on the hours. An earlier version of its website said Tuesday to Sunday, and the 2026 version says every night. The live site won’t load for readers like us, so my details come from its May 2026 copy on archive.org, and I’d confirm by phone for the night you want.

Booking, dress and prices

Bookings are on +377 93 25 52 00 or at [email protected], and for club tables the house asks you to ring directly. If anyone offers you a table without going through that number, I’d be wary. Common night-time pitfalls have their own page, scams and safety in Monaco.

The dress code is «chic casual». For men, no shorts and no open shoes. Long trousers, a shirt and proper shoes are what I’d wear, and that also gets you into the Casino at night.

I can’t give you prices. The site links to a winter menu PDF that hasn’t been preserved, and I won’t pass on third-party figures. Ask for the menu when you sit down.

Fitting it into your night

Sass is on the same avenue as Twiga Monte Carlo, in the Grimaldi Forum, and Jimmy’z, further along at the Sporting. They’re three different nights. Twiga is the priciest and showiest, Jimmy’z the classic Friday and Saturday nightclub, and Sass the long dinner with live music.

Who it suits

Sass Café isn’t the most cutting-edge place in Monaco, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s a 1993 room refurbished with a taste for excess, where you dine to live music and end up dancing without changing chairs. For a celebration as a couple or with friends, when you want the night to run on, I think it’s a safe bet. For a quiet dinner and a proper conversation, I’d pick somewhere else.
