Herculis, a night of world-class athletics in Fontvieille's stadium

Monaco isn’t a place you associate with athletics, and that’s exactly the charm. One July evening a human-sized stadium in Fontvieille fills up to watch the world’s best run and jump a few metres from the stands. It’s the Herculis meeting, Monaco’s leg of the Diamond League, and for my money few sporting nights in the Principality are as much fun. Below I explain how it started, what the 2026 edition offered and how I’d plan the evening.

A meeting born with its stadium

Herculis began in September 1987, at the then brand-new Stade Louis II, driven by the Monegasque Athletics Federation’s wish to give its sport an international stage. In 2010 it joined the Diamond League, athletics’ elite circuit, and it has since been voted the best meeting in the world several times, according to the tourist board.

The stadium sits in Fontvieille, the district built on reclaimed land, a stone’s throw from the border with Cap-d’Ail. Outside competitions it can be visited on a guided tour, which I cover with times in the Stade Louis II.

The 2026 meeting and what was on

The 2026 edition took place on 10 July. The first big name confirmed was Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, three-time Olympic 1,500 m champion and world record holder at 1,500 m and the mile, who ran the 3,000 m. Her bond with Monaco is special, because she broke the world mile record here in 2023, and before returning to the track she had run her first 10 km in the city, at the Monaco Run.

The programme was a full one, with something happening almost every few minutes. For men, 100, 400 and 800 m, 3,000 or 5,000 m, the 3,000 m steeplechase, high jump and long jump. For women, 200 and 400 m, 3,000 m, 100 m hurdles, pole vault, triple jump and javelin. The breakdown is in the table. I haven’t read the results in an official source, so I’d rather not quote times. What I can say is that a programme like this, with a star such as Kipyegon on a distance she rarely races, is exactly the kind of night that makes the trip worthwhile, because you never know what the clock will show.

The stadium, beyond the meeting

The Stade Louis II opened on 25 January 1985 and is home to AS Monaco, which puts its capacity at 16,877 seats. For Herculis that means something I value a lot, stands where you’re nearly always close to the track, without the watching-ants-from-the-rafters feeling of the big Olympic stadiums.

If your dates don’t line up with the meeting, you can still see the stadium with a guide on weekdays during the April to September season, for €5.80, with tours in French, English or Italian. It isn’t a Diamond League night, of course, but for a sports fan it’s a cheap extra.

When is the 2027 meeting?

At the end of September 2026 the date hadn’t been published. By habit the meeting falls in July, but I wouldn’t count on it until the Diamond League calendar is out. I’d check the circuit’s website over the winter and book a hotel as soon as it’s confirmed, because July is peak season along the whole Riviera. For a British visitor it pairs nicely with a few days on the beach at Larvotto.

How I’d plan it

I’d arrive in Monaco in the afternoon, wander round Fontvieille harbour and the landscaped park, both a short walk from the stadium, and head in early, because in a stadium this size the athletes coming out onto the track is part of the show. If Monaco prices in July get silly, Cap-d’Ail sits right next to Fontvieille and is the logical alternative for a bed, a short walk from the stadium gates.
