Monaco at Christmas and New Year, when the harbour becomes a Christmas village

Monaco at Christmas looks little like the summer postcard. The harbour swaps yachts for wooden chalets, Casino Square lights up and the big events are far off, so the city goes back to its residents. I think it is a very rewarding time to visit, as long as you know what closes and which nights get complicated.

The Christmas village, where everything happens

The Village de Noël is set up on the Quai Albert Ier, the harbour quay, and in 2026-2027 it runs from Friday 4 December, from 16:00, to Sunday 3 January, until 22:00. Entry is free. From Sunday to Thursday it opens from 11:00 to 22:30, and on Fridays and Saturdays until 23:00. The figures come from the regulations the Mairie publishes for the stallholders, because this year’s activities programme is still to be announced.

To give you an idea, in 2025 there were 23 food stalls, 24 gift chalets, rides and a big wheel, plus parades, concerts, shows and children’s workshops. The princely family opened it on 5 December by switching on the lights. I would go at dusk, when the decorations come on, and eat standing up at the stalls rather than at a harbourside terrace.

What happens in Monaco on New Year’s Eve?

The 31st is the big night. The town hall organises a free, open-access party at the harbour, and in 2025 there were two stages with DJs from 21:00 to 2:00 and fireworks at midnight. The 2026 programme is not out, but the Christmas village regulations already set hours of 11:00 to 2:30 for that night, with last entry at 2:00. That fits with the party happening again.

If you want something more formal, the Salle Garnier is staging Offenbach’s La Vie parisienne at 18:00 on the 31st, which leaves time for dinner and a walk down to the harbour. Tickets and dress are covered on my Monte-Carlo Opera page. On the 24th the village closes earlier, at 19:30, so I would not count on it for Christmas Eve.

Skating on a swimming pool

In winter the Olympic pool at the Stade Nautique Rainier III, on the same harbour, turns into an ice rink. In 2025-2026 it opened on 5 December and ran until 1 March, at a single price of €8 with skates, free for under-5s, with helmets and pads lent against an ID document. The Mairie shortened it by four metres so it could be covered at night when nobody is skating, using less energy to keep it frozen.

No dates have been published for 2026-2027, so I cannot promise it. If you are travelling with children, I would check before going, and the rest of their options are in Monaco with kids.

What closes on the 25th, and how to plan those days

Here is the trap. On 25 December the Oceanographic Museum, the Exotic Garden, Villa Paloma and Princess Antoinette Park close, and the Palace has been shut to visitors since 15 October, because in 2026 it only opened from 30 March to that date. On 1 January Villa Paloma and the park close again.

My advice is to keep Christmas Day for walking. The harbour with its village, the climb up to the Rock and Casino Square lit up never close, and in winter a vintage carousel goes up in the Boulingrins, in the Casino gardens. The street lights have their own ceremony too. In 2024 the official switch-on was on 30 November from Palace Square, and the Mairie lights up every district. The 2026 date has not been announced.

The weather and what to pack

December in Monaco is mild for winter. According to the SBM, in the depths of winter the thermometer hardly ever drops below 8 °C, and Météo-France’s December average gives a high of 13.9 °C and a low of 8.5 °C. In exchange it is one of the wetter months, with 88.8 mm on average. I would pack a light coat, an umbrella and, if you are going to the opera, something smart. If you can, stay on into January

The best thing about coming over the holidays is that January arrives packed. On 21 January 2027 the Monte-Carlo Rally starts from the harbour, the Circus Festival begins on the 22nd, and the patron saint, Sainte Dévote, has her feast on the 26th and 27th, with a boat set alight by the quay.
