The Chapel of Mercy, where Holy Week on the Rock begins

It’s easy to walk straight past. The Chapel of Mercy stands on Place de la Mairie among ochre house fronts, with no ticket office and no sign inviting you in. Yet it’s the building that best captures the Rock’s everyday faith, the world of brotherhoods, robes and night-time processions. Here’s its story, and why I’d look at it with fresh eyes over Easter.

A short stop I’d happily make

The tourist office dispatches it in a line, a chapel with Baroque ornamentation in Monaco-Ville. True enough, and not much. What’s interesting is less the building than who has used it for nearly four centuries, a lay brotherhood that began by burying plague victims and now keeps the religious side of Monaco’s traditions and festivals going.

It’s a few minutes on foot from the Palace and Monaco Cathedral, so there’s no detour involved. All I’d ask is that you don’t come expecting a museum. It’s a place of worship in the cathedral parish, and that’s how to treat it, as with any of the churches in Monaco.

From the Black Penitents to the archconfraternity

The Comité National des Traditions Monégasques tells the story. The first known brotherhood on the Rock was the White Penitents, nicknamed the flagellants because they whipped themselves during processions. In the Great Plague of 1631 they cared for the population and buried the dead. A few years later disagreements among the members led to a split, and on 22 May 1639 the Black Penitents were founded with the approval of Honoré II, their first honorary prior.

They first settled in the chapel of Saint Barbara on Palace Square, then on 28 January 1646 moved to a new chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, the one that carries the name today. During the French Revolution Monaco was annexed and brotherhood property was requisitioned. On 12 October 1813 the Bishop of Nice merged the white and black penitents into today’s Vénérable Archiconfrérie de la Miséricorde, and since the Grimaldis returned in 1814 the princes have remained its honorary priors. When can you see inside the Chapel of Mercy?

Here I have to be honest. No official source I’ve read gives visiting or Mass times. The diocese lists it in its 2026 directory as a place of worship in the cathedral parish, with an address on Place de la Mairie and at 10 Rue Notre-Dame de Lorette, but no hours. The tourist office doesn’t give any either.

My approach is to treat it as a passing stop. If the door’s open, go in quietly and take in the Baroque decoration. If it’s shut, the façade with the Grimaldi arms on the pediment is worth a photo on its own. What I wouldn’t do is plan the morning around it.

Maundy Thursday and Good Friday on the Rock

For me, this chapel really comes into its own in Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday the gilded wooden statue of the Virgin of Sorrows, normally on display in the chapel, is carried in procession by the brothers and sisters through the lanes to the cathedral, where the archbishop performs the washing of the feet.

Good Friday is the big night. As darkness falls the Rock’s lights are veiled and the Dead Christ procession moves off to a funeral march from the municipal band. The cortège follows a set order representing scenes from the Passion, with the Virgin, the three Marys, the twelve apostles and Roman soldiers around the bier of Christ carried by the penitents. The brothers wear white albs, black capes with red buttons and black cords, and the sisters white capes with black veils and cords.

In 2027 Maundy Thursday falls on 25 March and Good Friday on 26 March. The town hall hasn’t published the programme yet, so I’d check the times on its website a few weeks ahead. Through the rest of the year the archconfraternity also turns out for the Corpus Christi procession, the procession of Saint Devota’s relics, the pilgrimage to Laghet and princes’ funerals.

What else is on Place de la Mairie

The chapel shares the square with the town hall, a 16th-century building that was a private house, a school and a barracks before the Mairie moved in. It opens its reception rooms for European Heritage Days, in 2026 on Sunday 4 October from 10:00 to 17:00, with free entry and traditional dancing at 12:30.
