Going to the Monaco Grand Prix in 2027, and how I'd spend the weekend

The Monaco Grand Prix is the race most people want to see once in their life, and to my mind it’s also the one people plan worst. They fix on the Sunday, pay for a seat they couldn’t find on a map and forget that the whole town rearranges itself around the track. When is the Monaco Grand Prix in 2027?

The 2027 race weekend runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 June, according to Formula 1’s own ticketing. Visit Monaco presents the event from Thursday 3 June, and the Automobile Club de Monaco does sell a Thursday ticket, but the Formula 1 programme starts on the Friday. The official 2027 programme fills the Thursday with Formula 3, Porsche Supercup and Formula 2 practice, so I wouldn’t buy that day expecting to see an F1 car.

Monaco also opens the European season in 2027. General sale opened to the public on 1 October 2026, after Automobile Club members got their turn on 17 September.

The 2026 race, the 83rd, is done and dusted. It ran from 4 to 7 June, with support categories only on the Thursday, qualifying on Saturday from 16:00 to 17:00 and the race on Sunday at 15:00, over 78 laps or 120 minutes. That’s 14:00 on a British clock, which matters if friends at home are watching along. I’ve kept that timetable in the table as a guide to how a weekend here is laid out.

What the Sprint does to Saturday

This is the change I like most. For the first time, Monaco gets the Sprint format in 2027, with Sprint qualifying on Friday, the Sprint itself on Saturday morning where practice 3 used to be, and Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday afternoon. At Monaco, where overtaking is rare, qualifying has always carried a lot of weight, and now it shares a day with a race.

For anyone watching the budget, that turns Saturday into the best-value day of the weekend. Standing on the Rocher costs €100 on Saturday against €200 on Sunday, and you see two sessions that count. If I were going for the first time and could only afford one day, that’s the one I’d choose.

Where I’d watch from

I’ve ranked the areas above with my own scores. My first choice is the Rocher, the rock below the Palace, because it’s the cheapest Sunday entry by a long way. You stand, there’s no numbered place, and you need to be there early. If the budget stretches to a seat, I’d look at the two stands the organiser describes with a pit view, L at the Piscine Rainier III and T at the Cale de Halage, and I’d pick covered T to avoid hours in the June sun.

The 2027 terms ban resale and transfer, so a ticket from someone else can be refused at the gate. A town rebuilt around a racetrack

The Grand Prix doesn’t last three days in Monaco. In 2026 the stands and barriers for all three motor races, the Historic Grand Prix, the E-Prix and Formula 1, were in the streets from 23 February to 17 July. The Quai Albert Ier took no traffic for that whole period, and avenue J.-F. Kennedy closed on each race weekend. The 2027 dates will come in a new ministerial order.

On race weekend itself the town changes use. The Palace, the Oceanographic Museum, the Exotic Garden and the Prince’s car collection close, and in 2026 even the Condamine market moved to the Espace Léo Ferré to make room for the fan zone. Taxis switch to fixed race fares from Thursday at 08:00 to Monday at 23:59. Under the table that came in with the September 2026 order, that’s €30 for any trip inside Monaco, against €18 on a normal day, and €160 to Nice airport.

Getting there, getting around and staying

I wouldn’t bring a car. With streets shut and traffic restricted, the train from Nice is the sensible way in, and the bus alternative is weighed up in getting from Nice to Monaco. In 2026 the government announced free town buses during the major events, the Grand Prix included, with the exact days confirmed by the bus company. Two things I’d sort out before leaving the UK. Monaco sits outside the EU, and after Brexit every UK operator decides for itself how Europe is billed, so check whether your plan covers Monaco before your phone joins a local network at the circuit. As for a bed, prices climb on race weekend and good rooms go early. I’d start looking many months ahead in where to stay in Monaco, and I’d favour anything within walking distance of the station.
